A Republic If We Can Keep It

Once again the Senate engaged in high stakes brinkmanship. They took the US economy to the edge of disaster before finally voting to extend the debt ceiling until December 3rd. In his speech afterward, Senator Schumer went after Republicans for playing games that delayed the vote.
Unhappy with Schumer, Mitt Romney said to him.” there’s a time to be graceful and there’s a time to be combative. That was a time for grace and common ground.”
Really Mitt? Is he seriously calling out Democrats for being combative? Romney remains a part of a political party that supports the big lie, defends insurrectionists and continues to align itself with the most divisive figure in American political history.
Frankly, Romney and his Republican cohorts can no longer stand on moral high ground. In 2015, they sold their souls to Trump. They checked humanity at the door when they put kids in cages. They aligned with “very good people” in Charlottesville. They refused to hold Trump accountable time and again, even after he told the mob to go to the Capitol on January 6th and “fight like hell.” Republicans chose Trump over America, and here we are.
American Democracy is under attack. The Republican Party is actually a post Democracy Faction grounded in racism, political conspiracies, propaganda, and ignorance. In Republican controlled states nationwide, voting rights are being assaulted in efforts to install a Red Regime to replace legally elected officials.
So, no Mitt. This is not a time for grace. There is no common ground. Any naive Democrat who does not admit this and act accordingly is complicit in Republican efforts to destroy America.
On September 17, 1787, when asked 'what kind of government shall we have', Benjamin Franklin replied, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
This is the question every Republican and Democrat in Congress needs to ask him or herself: Do you still believe in the American Republic and will you honor your oath to protect, preserve and defend the Constitution?
Their answers and subsequent actions will determine the fate of America.
