DOUBTING THOMAS

Updated: Nov 27, 2022

Affirmative Action Hanging In The Balance

Clarence Thomas has become quite infamous. Most notably for being the only justice to dissent when the Supreme Court went against Trump and rejected his effort to hold on to January 6th White House documents. Oh yeah, how could one forget, he’s also the husband to Ginni, one of the architects of the insurrection. However, I’m not here to discuss that.

On October 31, 2022 the Supreme Court heard two cases involving affirmative action. The Court’s decision will determine the legality of affirmative action in college admission decisions.

Thomas questioned whether diversity itself should be a goal for schools. “I’ve heard the word ‘diversity’ quite a few times, and I don’t have a clue what it means,” Thomas said. “It seems to mean everything for everyone.”

Did you know that Clarence Thomas was nominated to fill the vacancy left by Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court Justice? Thomas’ questionable moral compass was highlighted during his nomination hearing where Anita Hill testified that Thomas had sexually harassed her.

Since then, Clarence Thomas has been a disgrace and has stood against everything that Thurgood Marshall fought for as a civil rights lawyer.

Thomas has participated in the dismantling and thereby weakening of voter rights protections and now he is yet again set to participate in the undoing of a civil rights staple, affirmative action, the very thing he relied on as he ascended. Going as far as comparing it to slavery.

This could strike a blow to another longstanding precedent. Affirmative action is defined as a set of procedures designed to eliminate unlawful discrimination among applicants, to remedy the results of prior discrimination. Basically it's an effort to improve the employment and educational opportunities of minority groups, so not sure where Thomas got the slavery comparison.

Clarence Thomas is hell bent on undermining civil rights and the equal justice accomplishments of his predecessor, Thurgood Marshall. The disrespect is clear, had Thurgood Marshall not been a ground breaker, there would not have been a place for Clarence Thomas. How does Clarence repay Thurgood Marshall? By opposing any and everything that would help African Americans. It is abundantly clear that America’s second Black Justice won’t be satisfied until he demolishes everything that the first Black justice achieved.

Thurgood Marshall opened doors that Clarence Thomas is determined to close.
